40 days after Christmas

Forty days after Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph went with him to the temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, and to fulfill the requirements of the law at that time (you can read the story in Luke 2:22-40).

2nd February is forty days after Christmas. On that day (or a Sunday near it) we mark the day as “The Presentation of Christ in the Temple” - an occasion otherwise known as “Candlemas”. It is a watershed moment in the year, for the story takes us back for one last look at the birth of Jesus, but also looks forward to His sufferings.

From now on, our thoughts turn more and more to the events leading to the cross – and then beyond that to the Resurrection and the glories of Easter Day. From now on we prepare our hearts and minds to enter into these events more fully.

This month we have our own watershed moment. Since the retirement of Bishop Bill we have been without an area-bishop for North Africa. On 27th February the Very Reverend Dr Samy Fawzy Shehata will be consecrated as our new area-bishop. Rev Peter and Rev David will represent St George’s at the ceremony. Bishop Samy will live in Egypt and visit his episcopal area from there. Please pray for him as he prepares his heart and mind for this new ministry.
